The Hospital de la Santa Creu i Sant Pau operated on this site for nearly 79 years, from 1930 to June 2009. Then it moved to the new Hospital de Sant Pau on the north side of the property. The old building closed to patient care.
What you visit today
What you see as a tourist is the historic Recinte — the 12 pavilions Domènech i Montaner designed, the gardens, the tunnels, the restored Sant Rafael ward showing what a 1920s hospital ward looked like. It’s a museum now, a cultural landmark, a window into early-twentieth-century hospital design and Barcelona’s modernisme period.
If you need medical help
Call 112 or go to the working Hospital de Sant Pau (a separate modern building on the north side of the site). It’s one of Spain’s leading hospitals, but it is not the Recinte you visit as a tourist.
The "isn’t that a hospital?" question is so common that the city official site makes a point of it. The short answer: it was, it isn’t, and what you visit is a UNESCO World Heritage site showing how a hospital was designed 120 years ago.
